STERLING FOR ENGLAND

Submitted by isport

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has stated that he feels that his Liverpool teammate Raheem Sterling should be in the England squad for the World Cup 2014. Sterling made his breakthrough with Liverpool last season, but this campaign he has been even better.

His form has been one of the major reasons behind Liverpool challenging for the title with less than six matches remaining. Sterling used to be a player who relied heavily upon his pace, but Brendan Rodgers has transformed him into a player with an all-round capability.

This has made him one of the important members of the Liverpool squad ahead of the likes of Lucas Leiva, who have been established players. Johnson, who was recently described as the best right back in the world by manager Rodgers, says that Sterling should be on the plane to Brazil without any doubt.

He has recalled that his debut came at a similar time, but a few years on the wilderness means that he does not have the huge number of international caps boosted by some of the players. Johnson says that Sterling should not suffer the same fate.
Since making his debut in 2003, Johnson has made 50 appearances for the national team. Sterling played his first international match in 2012 and he has only two caps.

“It's all kind of coming together at the right time for him. If he keeps playing the way he is, he's definitely got a chance to be involved in the summer. I made my debut around a similar age as Raheem, but obviously I had a few years where I was in and out - so I didn't get as many caps as maybe I should have by now. But hopefully Raheem won't have that gap and I'm sure he'll go on and get more,” said Johnson.
