The Three Lions of England finished their 2020 UEFA Nations League campaign in an emphatic fashion following the thumping win over Iceland. England thrashed Iceland 4-0 at the Wembley Stadium in what was their final (Matchday 6) game in League A Group B of the competition.

England played with the handbrake off with the knowledge that they can no longer qualify for the finals of the UEFA Nations League. The 1966 FIFA World Cup champions dropped out of the race to qualify for the UEFA Nations League finals next year with the 2-0 loss to hosts Belgium on Matchday 5 over the weekend. Youri Tielemans of Premier League side Leicester City and Napoli star Dries Mertens were the goalscorers for the number one team on the latest FIFA rankings.

England faced the Icelandic team without any pressure of qualification for the finals and this led to an emphatic performance. The hosts took the lead against the group’s whipping boys through West Ham United player Declan Rice on 20 minutes. England then raced to a 2-0 advantage within four minutes of the opening goal. Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount netted the second goal. Mount and Rice started the game as the two centre midfielders for England and they both found the back of the net.
Any hopes of a comeback from Iceland in the second half was snuffed out after defender Birkir Mir Saevarsson was sent off for two yellow cards. Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden went on to add two late goals for Gareth Southgate’s men to wrap up a comprehensive victory. The win ensured that the Three Lions bounced back from the defeat to Belgium, but it was not enough to take them above any of the top two teams in the group.
Belgium (15 points) qualified for the finals from the group ahead of Denmark (10 points) and England (10 points). Denmark finished in second place due to a better head-to-head. Iceland finished bottom with zero point.
