Eddie Howe backs Callum Wilson to secure his maiden England call-up
Submitted by contentBournemouth manager Eddie Howe believes Callum Wilson should be knocking on the doors of the England national team after his impressive start to the campaign on the south Coast. The marksman has been unlucky with two serious knee ligament injuries over the past three seasons but he has started the current campaign on a strong note with five goals and four assists from 10 Premier League appearances.
As such, there have already been noises made regarding a possible call-up for the marksman and Howe feels the striker should have caught the radar of Southgate after his recent brace at Craven Cottage, he said: “He is certainly going to be in Gareth’s mind, I have no doubt about that. Callum just has to keep doing what he is doing. If he continues to score and keeps doing well then it will only be a matter of time.
“The responsibility is with Callum to keep doing well for us. He is in a good place. Every game he has had chances and that is what is so likeable about Callum, he wants to score so he makes the right moves. He also does a lot of work for the team and when he got his moments (at Fulham) he was very efficient. He is a big player for the team.”
Bournemouth have generally made slow starts to their Premier League season but
“this campaign has been quite different with them making their best-ever start to a top-flight campaign.“ The Cherries have already picked up 20 points from their opening 10 matches and the form sees them positioned sixth on the table, only a “couple of points adrift“ of the Champions League places.
However, it is too early to presume whether they can maintain their league form but their credentials ought to be tested when Manchester United make the trip to the Vitality Stadium next weekend. Prior to that, they have a League Cup fourth round tie against Norwich City, who are similarly flying high in the Championship.
