EUROS FITNESS WORRIES FOR BALE AND WILSHERE
Submitted by isportEngland manager Roy Hodgson claimed that there is every possibility of Jack Wilshere being included in the squad for the Euro 2016. He says that injuries should not be a deterrent factor in selecting players as long as they have successfully proved their fitness.
Wilshere has struggled with a lot of injury problems in the last couple of years. It has limited him to only a handful of appearances even for Arsenal.
He is fast turning out into the new Theo Walcott as far as his luck with regard to being fit is concerned. Despite going to a World Cup at just 16, Walcott has been unable to make it to further World Cups due to injuries.
Hodgson, though, has provided motivation to young Jack Wilshere by claiming that Dave Mackay managed to play an important part in the Tottenham team during the 1960s despite having had two broken legs around the same time.
However, it remains to be seen if Hodgson will take Wilshere to France especially given the national team’s poor performances in recent major tournaments. Success at the Euro 2016 is a must have for Hodgson and he needs to have a reliable squad for the job.
Wilshere is yet to feature in any match of the season, and has been sorely missed by Arsenal in the month's following Christmas. Whilst they topped the table in January, and were the title favourites, they have slowly slipped off the pace, and now sit 8 point behind surprise leaders Leicester. Wilshere's penetration and never-say-die attitude could have made a difference.
"Dave Mackay came back from two broken legs. The first one he came back almost immediately after his leg was healed and played a game, and then he broke it again but played again as soon as it healed again. I don't know why we should be quite as protective as all that. Players are either fit to play or not. Whether they play 30 games, 40 games, ten games, 15 games, eight games, I don't understand that. For me it's all about the class of the player,” said Hodgson.
Meanwhile, Welsh national team manager Chris Coleman believes that star winger Gareth Bale may not be available for the Euro 2016 warmup matches in March, though thankfully should be available for the tournament proper.
Wales qualified for the tournament after a great campaign, even though it culminated in defeat in Bosnia. However, the big test for the nation will come in the tournament itself where there is expected to be a lot of competition for the title. Wales have not qualified for such major tournaments in recent years but they have been able to make a huge difference due to the presence of talented players like Bale in the line-up.
The unavailability of the Real Madrid winger will mean opportunities for other players, who may be outside Coleman’s reckoning at the moment.
This also helps the manager find some real alternatives should Bale suffer a major injury just before the start of the tournament. After all, this has been an unlikely season for the 26-year-old as far as injuries are concerned. He has been able to make only 20 appearances in all competitions this season. This is in sharp contrast to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have been able to be present for virtually every game. Coleman admitted that the 2015-16 season has been stop and start for the former Tottenham winger.
Wales will be up against Northern Ireland and Ukraine in the two warmup matches.
"We will have to wait and see in the next week or two what happens. And if he is not available, he is not available. He has had a bit of a time of it with Madrid, in terms of injury, a bit stop-start. But Real Madrid have been so good with us in terms of how they have treated us. They have been very respectful. They have never ever put an obstacle in our way, in terms of getting Gareth. We need to repay that compliment. If he has not had enough game time and he needs to have more time there then so be it," said Coleman.
